Ecuador controlled avian influenza outbreaks and for three months it has not reported new cases. This was highlighted by those attending the 90th general session of the World Assembly of Delegates of the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO), at a meeting held in Paris.
To achieve this, the Government of Ecuador has invested more than USD 2,700,000 to contain the Avian Influenza outbreak. This was reported by the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Eduardo Izaguirre Marín. The official stressed that in the country 6,300,000 birds have been vaccinated and that there are 90 days without outbreaks of this disease on commercial farms.
“Ecuador has potential and we must join efforts to stand out in animal health issues and pest control measures and plant and animal health diseases”, said the Minister.
In this meeting, held in Paris from May 21 to 25 of this year, Ecuador was unanimously chosen as the regional headquarters of the World Organization for Animal Health in 2024. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), this places the country at the top of international animal health issues. For the first time, it will house its namesakes to discuss and agree on issues relevant to animal health.

The delegation designated by the MAG was made up of the executive director of Agrocalidad, Patrick Almeida; and the Animal Health coordinator of the Agency, Christian Zambrano. They attended this international meeting where administrative and technical resolutions were adopted.
In addition, in a meeting with the deputy director and the representative of the Americas of this international organization, the MAG delegation proposed that the Agency’s laboratories are of regional reference for identification of bluetongue in bovines.
A bilateral meeting was also held with representatives of the Republic of China. The theme was the continuity of the processes for the opening of livestock merchandise to that destination.
