Fernando Villavicencio, in addition to being a respected journalist by profession, was a passionate defender of the justice and transparency. Since May of this year, held a seat in Parliament as part of Honesty Alliance party. However, his aspirations transcended even more when he decided to run as an independent presidential candidate in the early elections scheduled for August 20.

A suspect in custody who died hours later

The Ecuadorian Prosecutor’s Office quickly informed about the arrest of a suspect connected to the murder of Villavicencio. However, events took an even darker turn when the suspect was wounded during a shootout and later died in the Unidad de Flagranza in Quito.

Tragically, the murder of Villavicencio is not an isolated incident in Ecuador’s electoral campaign. On July 17, the candidate for the National Assembly, Rider Sánchez, he also lost his life in an act of violence in the coastal province of Esmeraldas.

A few days later, an armed attack in the town of Manta claimed the life of the mayor Augustine Intriagoas well as a young soccer player, leaving four other people injured.
