With the aim of highlighting and promoting climate action at the national level, the event “Cities for Climate: Results 2023” was held in Cuenca. At this meeting, the results of the participation of Ecuadorian municipalities in two international climate initiatives of which they have been a part voluntarily over the last year were presented.

Marisol Peñaloza, Acting Mayor of Cuenca and Tarsicio Granizo, Country Director for WWF-Ecuador.

The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM) represents the largest global alliance of cities and local governments committed to the fight against climate change, promoted since 2018 in Ecuador. This pact was achieved thanks to the collaboration between the Association of Ecuadorian Municipalities (AME), the Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition (MAATE), the Mayor’s Office of the Metropolitan District of Quito (DMQ) and WWF Ecuador, with the support of the Delegation of the European Union in Ecuador.

In 2019, the First National Strategy of the GCoM was approved and funding was obtained for its implementation. Subsequently, in 2021, the Second National Strategy was approved, the implementation of which began in 2023, framing the realization of this national event. In Ecuador, the two National Strategies have been financed by the European Union with the collaboration of the WWF. Currently, 14 cities in Ecuador are part of GCoM.

Ecuador was awarded a total of nine medals for progress through 2023, based on three fundamental pillars: adaptation, mitigation and access to energy. The country obtained eight medals for adaptation and one for access to energy and reduction of energy poverty. Among the cities recognized are Guayaquil, Quito, Cuenca, Lago Agrio, Ambato and Montecristi. In addition, Quito and Cuenca are part of the 15 Latin American cities included in the Global Compact’s Emblematic Cities program, playing a crucial role as an example in the climate fight for other cities.
