Ecuador is a country with great potential for renewable natural resources whose use should be expanded in the production of the energy it demands, said Thursday the manager of the country’s state-owned Electric Corporation (Celec), Gonzalo Uquillas.

For this reason, it has been proposed to “identify duly studied renewable energy projects (hydroelectric, wind, photovoltaic and geothermal)” to develop them through partnership mechanisms between the public and private sectors, added Uquillas during a forum of experts held in Quito.

Precisely, Uquillas explained at that meeting about the “new generation projects with non-conventional renewable sources” and said that “all the issues of renewable energy and energy transition only make sense if they strengthen energy security” in the country.

He recalled that Celec has proposed identifying renewable energy projects in the hydroelectric, wind, photovoltaic or solar and geothermal fields.

He mentioned the hydroelectric projects “Abitagua”, “Chontal” and “La Union”; the windmills “Pimo” and “Villonaco II”; the solar systems “Floating”, “Mazar”, “Matala”, “La Ceiba” and “Urcuquí”; as well as the geothermal “Chachimbiro”.

“Energy security, in addition to ensuring an economic and reliable service, should promote investment, the well-being of the people and the generation of employment,” said Uquillas in his presentation.

He recalled that Ecuador requires about 400 megawatts of new generation each year to adequately and safely meet the increase in energy demand.

The new projects identified would produce 1,400 megawatts of energy and their execution would require an estimated investment of 2,300 million dollars, he pointed out.

“The raw material exists, what is missing is for us to agree, create trust between the public and private sectors and materialize” these ideas, stressed the manager of the state-owned Corporación Eléctrica Ecuatoriana.
