The National Electoral Council (CNE) of Ecuador decided last night (08.25.2023) to repeat the vote for representatives to the National Assembly in foreign constituencies after the problems registered with the telematic voting system during last Sunday’s elections, attributed to cyberattacks from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Russia, Ukraine, Indonesia and China.
“The respective areas are being ordered to do what is appropriate for the repetition of elections of this dignity in the constituencies abroad,” said the president of the CNE, Diana Atamaint, at the end of the body’s plenary session held at the night this Friday. Although no date was set for the repetition of the vote, Atamaint herself proposed that it be done at the same time as the second round, on October 15, in which Luisa González and Daniel Noboa are competing for the presidency of the country. .

Although the body annulled the presidential and legislative elections abroad, the plenary session considered that the repetition of the vote would not affect the general result for President of the Republic, for which reason it declared that it was not necessary to organize new elections among emigrants for that dignity . However, since the voting abroad was annulled, the CNE has still not been able to announce the definitive official results for the election of assembly members.
The CNE’s decision came one day after the Revolución Ciudadana movement, led by former President Rafael Correa, called for an investigation and the repetition of the votes in electoral constituencies abroad, given the problems registered in the telematic voting system. The Construye movement, whose presidential candidate was the assassinated Fernando Villavicencio, had opposed the repetition, arguing that it favors the parties whose candidates have gone to the second round.
