The National Police said they are improving their skills with the implementation of the tool called GECCVID: Qualitative Geography against Violence and Crime. This tool was created together with the Ministry of the Interior and received support from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime for the Andean Region and the Southern Cone (UNODC).

This program allows you to locate on a map and study the risk factors, crime patterns and how they affect different areas. With this new tool, Ecuador improves its ability to make quick decisions that help the government protect citizens and prevent different types of crimes. Dr. Fausto Íñiguez, who is the Vice Minister of Public Security, together with Candice Welsch, UNODC regional representative and Mr. Luis Tarquino Vinueza, National Director of Police Information Analysis, signed the official document to deliver the GECCVID Tool.

The system includes 8 ways to enter information, 3 panels to review data, 8 more panels to verify information, an interactive map, a tool that automatically creates reports, 4 user guides and a data security protocol.

Deputy Minister Íñiguez announced that as part of the Ministry of the Interior’s Emerging Strategy to Prevent and Contain Criminal Violence 2023-2024, the skills of the National Police and local authorities will be strengthened. This will help improve how they respond to criminal groups, illegal markets and risks in communities through better identification, detection and analysis.

The application was developed and refined through a training process and pilot tests. Police officers from the National Police received training in the use of a Tool developed by UNODC experts. The training lasted 40 hours.

The Directorate of Information Analysis (DAI) team conducted initial tests in 18 specific areas over two weeks. During the official launch event, 38 symbolic awards were given to technical staff, and plaques of recognition were awarded to UNODC, DAI, DNTICS, Directorate of Crime Management, and ESRI for their role and responsibility in maintaining the tool.
