Less than two months after leaving the Wallabies, the Australian is very close to making his return to the leadership of the Brave Blossoms.

Less than two months after leaving the Wallabies, Eddie Jones is expected to return as Japan coach, subject to approval by the Japanese FA board of directors, local media reported on Sunday.

After a first mandate between 2012 and 2015, the 63-year-old Australian has in recent months been strongly associated with a return to the helm of the Japanese selection which he had led to a historic success over South Africa during the Cup of the world 2015 in England.

He successfully passed his job interview

Local media reported that Jones successfully passed a job interview by the Japan Rugby Football Union (JRFU) on Thursday in Tokyo. His appointment is expected to become official following approval by the JRFU Board of Directors on Wednesday, December 13.

Jones’ role in Japan’s emphatic victory over South Africa in 2015, in a match dubbed the ‘Brighton Miracle’, made him the leading favorite on the JRFU shortlist. His wife is Japanese and lives in the country while his mother is Japanese-American.

Sacked by England, resigned with Australia

Eddie Jones’ good results with Japan allowed him to obtain the position of England coach, who he took to the final of the 2019 World Cup, where they lost to South Africa.

Jones was fired by England last December after winning only five of the 13 Tests played in 2022. He was signed by Australia in January, but resigned in October after two wins in nine matches, punctuated by the worst performance in the history of the Wallabies in the World Cup where they were eliminated for the first time in the group stage.
