Edmundo González leaves Venezuela to go into exile in Spain

The vice president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguezreported that Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutiaobtained a safe conduct and has left the country heading to Spain to seek asylum.

“Today, September 7, opposition citizen Edmundo González Urrutia left the country. Having voluntarily sought refuge in the Spanish embassy in Caracas for several days, he requested political asylum from that government (…),” said Rodríguez.

He also assured that the Venezuelan government granted the due safe conducts to the opposition candidate “for the sake of tranquility and political peace in the country.”

The opposition candidate has been living in hiding since July 30 and is the subject of an investigation focused on the dissemination of copies of the electoral records, which were uploaded to an internet platform and which, according to opposition leader María Corina Machado, show Maduro’s defeat with more than 60 percent of the votes.

This investigation would point to Urrutia as guilty of conspiracy, usurpation of functions, instigation to rebellion and sabotage.

Without showing the detailed scrutiny of the tables as required by law, the National Electoral Council (CNE) declared Maduro the winner of the elections for a six-year presidential term, a fact that unleashed a series of protests in which 27 people have already died and more than two thousand have been arrested.

Maduro has blamed Machado and González for the protests and violence in Venezuela, calling for both to be imprisoned.
