The controversial Cuban director and screenwriter, Eduardo del Llano, directs a new short film titled The Campaign that maintains the satirical and social criticism line that has characterized his work.

The work, which has actor Luis Alberto García among the leading roles, is based on a story by the author that takes as its starting point the literacy campaign developed in Cuba during the 1960s.

The director was inspired for the film by one of his stories that tells the relationship between a young teacher and the family he has to teach literacy.

The filming of the short should conclude in the next few days and it is one of the first works that Del Llano directs after concluding his series about Nicanor O’Donell, a character with whom he delved into Cuban social reality for more than 15 years from a prism humorous and satirical.

Two Veterans was the last chapter of this series and tells the story of several elderly people of different ideologies who debate their political views in a Cuba in which the communist system no longer prevails.

Del Llano, who was one of the members of the comedy group Nos-y-Otros, gained great notoriety among Cubans with short films that strengthened Nicanor’s character such as High Tech, Homo Sapiens, Brainstorm, Photo Shop and Domino.

In The Campaign, his new work, Luis Alberto García shares the acting cast with prominent names in Cuban acting such as actress Tahimí Alvariño, and Yasmany Guerrero, Ana Patricia Martín, among others.

The well-known director has in parallel developed scripts for films such as Alice in Wonderland, by Daniel Díaz Torres; and La vida es silbar, by Fernando Pérez, two films with a profound impact on Cuban cinema.

He has also directed the feature films Vinci (2011) and Omega 3 (2014). The latter, with a plot set in a dystopian future marked by clashes between groups called vegetarians, macrobiotics and ovolactes, divided the opinion of viewers and was not well received among specialized critics.

Del Llano plans to release La Campaña in the coming months and then continue with various cinematographic works, without giving up the controversy, irony and humor that characterizes his personality and his work.
