Education and the emptied Spain

A few days ago some articles appeared in the press about the closure of an educational line at the IES Basoko that has left out all the families that had applied for new admission to said center, despite having other children studying there. My three children have completed primary school at CPEIP in Añorbe, which was a center attached to Basoko until two years ago, and my youngest son, who has to start secondary school next year, will not be able to study at the same institute as your brothers.

We have the added problem of living and working in a rural environment, so we do not have points for proximity to the educational center and we have been left in line on the waiting list and with zero chances that my son will study in the same center than their siblings, even if the Department of Education reconsiders and opens the closed line.

In addition to joining the complaints of other families, about the important problems of family reconciliation, logistics and costs that this circumstance causes us, with this letter I want to denounce the added discrimination suffered by those of us who live and work in rural areas.

Families who live or work in the city have the option of choosing from a wide range of educational centers, while those of us who live and work in towns are forced to go to the assigned public center without much choice.

Regional public transport disappears; the shops of a lifetime close, turning the towns into mere dehumanized bedrooms; public services are increasingly reduced, and on top of that they limit our children’s educational choice options.

Now that we are in electoral season, we are sure to hear our politicians talk about Empty Spain and how much they are going to do for it, but the reality is that the policies applied to rural areas only seek to reduce costs in the short term to the public coffers.

In this way, we feel more and more abandoned and discriminated against, and with regulations such as the one that is being applied for the choice of educational center, the towns are going to continue to be emptied unstoppably.
