During the day, the last 6 articles of the statutory bill were voted on, related to the duties and obligations of the State and students, peasant and rural education, higher education, adaptability to develop curricular programs that guarantee learning achievements, and extraordinary powers.

Government reaction

The Minister of Education, Aurora Vergara Figueroa, stated that “education is the basis of the National Agreement proposed by the President of the Republic, Gustavo Petro Urrego. I thank the First Committee of the House of Representatives for the majority support for the articles of the statutory bill. It generates hope for the country to see a legislative project advance that has managed to integrate the voices of the regions and all political parties.”

The owner of this portfolio added that “Today we have a common purpose that unites the nation and that is to ensure that education becomes the transformative force to overcome the historical inequalities of Colombia.”

For his part, the Minister of the Interior, Luis Fernando Velasco, stated that “the great reform to education can be carried out by this Congress by stipulating good principles in this statutory law. The best investment we can make as a society is in the education of future generations of Colombians.”

The project aims to regulate the fundamental right to education at all levels, in line with the international commitment of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that raises, in SDG4, the challenge of guaranteeing inclusive education, equitable and quality, promoting learning opportunities for all.
