I ask him what he is showing, and the student, very young, in the tenth year of basic education, describes his invention: it is an electric heater. This student, together with another 190 exhibitors, classmates from other courses of the Bilingual Intercultural Educational Unit “Jatari Unancha” of Cotopaxi, exhibit their creations in the Open House Strong Mind, in the Coliseum of the Pontifical Catholic University of Quito.

The students, in agreement with the Inti Raymi, harvest festival, they share with us the results of their work, most electrical or mechanical technological inventions linked to local agricultural or industrial productive needs, also food trade, natural medicine and new creations of traditional clothing for indigenous youth.

In the background it is an exhibition of work, talent and creativity of a local educational project which has more than 40 years of life directed by father José Manangón, who has called and received support from universities and polytechnics in this minga for the improvement of rural education.

The public presentation in Quito of this Open House is to symbolically tell the big city that the indigenous people not only comes to protest, but also to show, in the emblematic coliseum of the PUCE, that in rural areas develops intelligence, creativity, technology and improves the quality of life.

Certainly this fact is also a demonstration that there is good news in the country, that there are reasons for hope, since an educational revolution is taking place in silence in Zumbahua and Cochabamba without asking the state or governments for permission. Educational change based on the ayllu, the community and the Andean philosophy.

Like this there are other innovative educational experiences in the country, although scattered. But as Father Manangón says, it is time to unite and build from below a long-term educational project that reaches everyone in the countryside and cities.
