Edwin van der Sar, victim of a cerebral hemorrhage, was admitted to intensive care, Ajax Amsterdam announced on Friday July 7 in a statement posted on Twitter. The 52-year-old Dutch former footballer, who played for Ajax Amsterdam and then Manchester United, was on vacation on a Croatian island when he fell, Dutch public broadcaster NOS said.

“Edwin van der Sar had bleeding around the brain. He is hospitalized in the intensive care unit and is in stable condition,” the football club said.

“Once there is more concrete information, an update will follow,” added Ajax, from whom Van der Sar recently resigned. “Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We are thinking of you. »

Ex-Dutch international goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar announced his resignation as general manager of Ajax Amsterdam in May after “an incredibly difficult time” and more than a decade in the club’s management.

A difficult last season with Ajax

Van der Sar’s resignation came after the Dutch club’s worst season in fourteen years as they finished third in the Eredivisie following a 3-1 loss to FC Twente.

Considered one of the best goalkeepers of his generation, Van der Sar defended the goals for Ajax between 1991 and 1999, winning the Champions League in 1995. He went on to win the ‘Big Ears Cup’ in 2008 with Manchester United after spells at Juventus and Fulham.

Van der Sar ended his international career in 2011. With 130 caps with the Oranje, he is the second most capped Dutch player behind Wesley Sneijder (134). Van der Sar returned to Amsterdam at the end of 2012 as Marketing Director. Four years later, he was promoted to the rank of general manager.
