During this meeting, which was attended by two members of the Council, Ahmed Abaddi and Amine Mounir Alaoui, the two parties discussed the global transformations taking place in the digital sector and their repercussions, both positive and negative, on the current and future development paths of Arab countries, the governance systems of states and companies, as well as on the lives of societies and individuals, the EESC said in a press release.

In his speech, Mr. Chami stressed the need for positive involvement in technological choices, innovation and digital transformation at the level of the Arab region, and its crucial role in achieving sustainable development, reports the same source.

And to note that this has prompted the Council to propose measures aimed at accelerating the adoption of necessary legislative, regulatory, institutional and awareness-raising measures, in particular to address the delay in the digital field, and to seize the great opportunities offered by digital technologies in terms of promoting democracy, citizen participation in the decision-making process, economic growth and improving social and cultural indicators.

For his part, the Speaker of the Arab Parliament considered that the development of any project, idea or initiative requires solid legislative bases, which requires the strengthening of the complementary role between the parliament and the government, as well as the participatory approach with all parties, stressing the importance of integrating Arab knowledge, especially in the field of knowledge, digitalization and innovation.

The President of the Parliamentary Working Group, for his part, spoke of the political, social and economic repercussions of digitalization, “which has a direct impact on daily life, hence the need to establish a legislative framework regulating the lives of citizens, and capable of facing current challenges.”

On this occasion, Mr Abaddi presented an overview of the EESC’s participatory approach, following the example of Mr Alaoui, who presented the Council’s Opinion “Towards a responsible and inclusive digital transformation”.

The Council has carried out a number of studies and opinions on the theme of modern technologies and digital transformation, including “School, new technologies and cultural bets” (2014), and “Digital transformation at the service of the citizen, for the achievement of sustainable economic development”, as a special theme of the Council’s annual report in 2016, in addition to “Technologies and values: the impact on young people” (2017), “For an innovation policy that releases energies to serve a new industrial model” (2020) and “Towards a responsible and inclusive digital transformation” (2021).
