At the first sitting of the new Riigikogu on Monday, the President of the Riigikogu was elected. It was the leader of the Eesti 200 Lauri Hussar. Two candidates were nominated – Lauri Hussar and Martin Helme.
The Eesti 200 faction has nominated Lauri Hussar, the chairman of its party. “Lauri is a just person and a leader with a firm hand, and he would also be a good leader for the Riigikogu,” said Eesti 200 MP Marek Reinaas.
Henn Põlluaas, a member of the Conservative People’s Party (EKRE), nominated the leader of his party, Martin Helme, as a candidate for the post of Speaker of the Riigikogu. “He is a real Estonian patriot in the best sense of the word. He has been working in the Riigikogu since 2015 and has excellent knowledge and experience of the work of the Riigikogu,” Põlluaas said.
He also praised Helme’s activities as Minister of Finance, stressing that thanks to this, there are still oil shale power plants in Estonia.
The candidate who receives the largest number of votes as a result of a secret ballot is considered elected. If there is an equal number of votes for both candidates, lots are drawn.
