Title: Watching TV Before Bedtime Can Have Negative Effects on Sleep and Health, Studies Show

From early childhood, we are taught to avoid certain things before going to bed, and it turns out that some of these recommendations are not just myths. For example, it is advisable to ensure that the TV is turned off before falling asleep.

A 2011 study conducted by Joshua J. Gooley from Duke-NUS Medical School and his team found that light, such as that emitted by a television, can suppress the hormone melatonin, commonly known as the “sleep hormone.” Melatonin promotes sleep and controls the body’s day-night rhythm, but exposure to blue light from a TV screen can make it more difficult to sleep and lead to restless sleep.

Furthermore, a study in 2019 by physician Yong-Moon Mark Park and his team found a connection between nighttime lighting and the risk of obesity in women. The researchers believe that exposure to artificial light at night can alter hormones and biological processes, increasing the risk of health disorders such as obesity.

While these studies show correlations rather than clear causal connections, they point to the potential negative effects of watching TV before bedtime. It is important to be mindful of the impact of technology and artificial lighting on our sleep and overall health.
