Cairo: At least 41 people died in a fire at a church in Giza, Egypt. 55 people were seriously injured.

About 90 percent of Egypt’s population is Muslim. About 10 percent of the population is Christian. The Giza region of Egypt is dominated by Christians. A service was held in the church there yesterday. More than 5,000 people participated in it.

A fire broke out due to electrical leakage while worship was going on. In a few minutes the fire spread rapidly. People inside the church could not leave immediately because of the crowd. As a result, 41 people died in the fire.

Most of them are women and children. More than 55 people were injured. The death toll is feared to rise as the condition of many is critical.

Firefighters battled the fire for several hours. Egyptian President Al-Sisi has expressed his deepest condolences to the families of those who died in the accident. The President has directed the authorities to provide necessary relief to the victims.
