The Social Security number is a basic code to carry out a multitude of procedures, but a great unknown for a large part of the citizenry. We explain what it’s for, what its digits mean and eight quick and easy ways to find it.
What is the Social Security number?
Social Security itself explains that the Social Security Number (NUSS) identifies the citizen in their relations with Social Security.
This identification number is mandatory for any citizen who is a beneficiary of pensions, subsidies or Social Security benefits. It is also mandatory prior to your affiliation or for registration in any Social Security scheme.
In addition, it is essential to request inclusion in the health system, unless you do so as a beneficiary of the number of another holder (a child with respect to a father or mother, for example).
What do the numbers mean?
The Social Security number is made up of 12 digits. The first two digits refer to the code of the province that has issued the membership number (NAF). This must be the same as the first two ZIP codes. The next eight digits is a number that Social Security automatically generates when someone signs up for the first time.
And the last two digits are the control digits and are used to verify that the written numerical sequence is correct.
Is it the same as the Membership Number (NAF)?
The NUSS coincides with the Affiliation Number (NAF). In fact, the Social Security number becomes the Affiliation Number at the moment in which the citizen begins, for the first time, a work activity that determines their inclusion in the Social Security System, in any of the regimes (general, self-employed, of the Sea, etc).
Where does the Social Security number appear?
1. On the health card. However, it must be taken into account that if your card is old or you have recently started working, it is possible that the affiliation number does not appear, but the beneficiary number. You can tell because it starts with the letter “B”.
2. On a doctor’s prescription. The membership number will appear next to the name.
3. In a payroll or employment contract, since it is one of the mandatory data. It can usually be found at the top of the document.
4. In a work life report. If you have previously requested your work history report or have the summary that comes home, you can also find your Social Security number.
5. At the electronic headquarters of the Social Security. In the “Your Social Security” area of the Social Security Headquarters. You can access with a Permanent Code, PIN Code, via SMS or with an electronic ID or electronic certificate. Once registered, you will find your membership number under your first and last name.
6. At the health center. You can go to your health center to ask simply by providing your ID.
7. Calling Social Security. You only have to provide your name and ID on the phone 901 502 050.
8. In benefit resolutions. If you have ever received any aid or public benefit, you can also find your membership number here.
How to check the Social Security number through Import@ss
Once on the Import@ss portal of the Social Security, you can view it by identifying yourself in your personal area or by clicking on the “Personal Data” category from where, in addition, you can download a report with your affiliation document in pdf format in case of you need it. You can identify yourself in Import@ss via SMS, with Cl@ve or digital certificate.
How do I apply for a Social Security number if I don’t have it?
If you are going to work for someone else (you are going to be hired by a company) and you do not have a Social Security number, the application process for this number must be carried out by the company.
For the rest of the cases, you can request the assignment through this Import@ss link, with the aforementioned identification methods. Once the NUSS has been assigned, the corresponding resolution will be issued, which you can print.
If you do not have any of the identification methods described, you can request your procedure online, through it is linked by Import@ss. Will need:
