Farewell to a musical icon: the beloved singer who performed the immortal hits from the movie and series “Flashdance” and “Tahila”, Irene Cara, passed away at the age of 63.

The American singer and actress is best known for her part song in the 1980 film “Fame”, as well as writing and singing the well-known hit “Flashdance… What a Feeling”, for which she won an Oscar and a Grammy. She later acted in films alongside Clint Eastwood and Tatum O’Neal.

Cara’s publicist, who announced her death last night, said she died at her home in Florida, but the cause was “currently unknown”. Born in 1959 in the Bronx, New York, Cara was the youngest of five children and began her career in Spanish-language television. Her father was Puerto Rican and her mother, Cuban-American. After recording music as a child, in both Spanish and English, she went on to appear in several Broadway musicals.

In 1980 Cara gained fame when she got the role of ‘Coco Hernandez’ – and sang the theme song of “Fame”. Her performance earned her a Best Actress nomination at the 1981 Golden Globe Awards.

Cara later co-wrote and sang the Flashdance hit “Flashdance… What A Feeling”. In 1984, she won an Oscar for Best Original Song as a co-writer of Flashdance, the song also won her a 1984 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance, and a Golden Globe for Best Original Song
