A handwritten letter from scientist Albert Einstein containing his equation E = mc2 was auctioned for more than $ 1.2 million. Writes about this The Guardian.

A letter dated October 26, 1946 in German was addressed to the Polish-American physicist and scientist’s opponent Ludwig Silberstein. In it, he noted to the addressee that his question can be answered with the formula E = mc2, “without any erudition.” Einstein used Princeton University letterhead.

It is noted that the auction house RR expected that the legendary document would be bought for about $ 400,000.

“This is an important letter from both a holographic and a physical point of view,” explained Bobby Livingston, executive vice president of RR Auction.

Only three copies of the equation, written by Einstein’s own hand, are known, according to the archivists of the Einstein Papers project at the California Institute of Technology and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The equation E = mc2 – energy is equal to mass times the speed of light squared – proved that time is not absolute and that mass and energy are equivalent.
