He won the cup twice with Eintracht and had a special nickname. Former Bundesliga goalkeeper Peter Kunter has now died.

Eintracht Frankfurt mourns the loss of Dr. Peter Kunter. The former Hessen goalkeeper died on Monday at the age of 82. As the Bundesliga club announced in the evening, Kunter died after a short, serious illness.

In addition to his football career and afterwards, Kunter worked as a dentist. That’s why he was nicknamed the “flying dentist”. In 1972 he opened his own practice in Frankfurt. Many teammates were his patients.

He played 287 competitive games for Frankfurt between 1965 and 1976 and won the cup twice with the SGE (1974 and 75) and reached the semi-finals of the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1976.

Until last year, Kunter was the goalkeeper with the most appearances for Eintracht and was only replaced by Kevin Trapp. After the end of his career, Kunter remained loyal to the association, serving as vice president from 1977 to 1979 and as a member of the board of directors from 2001 to 2005.

Third goalkeeper at the 1972 European Championships

For the 1972 European Championship, in which Germany triumphed, he was on call as the third goalkeeper. However, Kunter never played an international match in the men’s division. He played nine games for the DFB youth national team.

Before his time at Eintracht, the only 1.76 meter tall goalkeeper stood between the posts for the then second division club Freiburger FC (1961-65). The Berlin native used this to finance his studies (sports, German studies and later dentistry). In 1969, when he had long been the starting goalkeeper in Frankfurt, he received his doctorate at Goethe University.
