For a long time it looked like Eintracht could take something from Leverkusen – also thanks to their consistent goalscorer Omar Marmoush. A clumsy move from Kevin Trapp decides the game in favor of the German champions. But the referee Felix Brych is also on the spot.

The game started with excitement: Junior Dina Ebimbe was trying to clear the ball from the penalty area, Amine Adli drifted between them and fell (5th). Referee Felix Brych called attention to the penalty spot – and upheld the controversial decision even after studying the video. However, Trapp denied the Bayer striker Boniface from the spot, who was even able to keep the shot.
Marmoush falls and hits
The Frankfurt team went into the game with a blow to the post: Marmoush played a one-two with Mario Götze and took a shot, but the aluminum blocked the goal (12th). Three minutes later, Marmoush was on target again when Andrich lightly beat him in the penalty area. Brych again decided on VAR support and, according to the video images, on a penalty for Eintracht. A tough second decision from Brych, who didn’t have a good hand with potential free kicks as the game progressed.
Marmoush had no worries: he grabbed the ball and gave no chance to Lukas Hradecky in the Bayer box – 1-0 to Frankfurt. And by the way, Eintracht’s sixth Bundesliga game with at least one goal from the Egyptian.
Ekitiké’s goal does not count
The game remained lively and Leverkusen worked for an equaliser. In the 23rd minute, Boniface first failed from close range and then Granit Xhaka missed the goal from an ambush. Two minutes later the time had come: Andrich together with Adli and Martin Terrier and a cool shot into the far corner – 1:1.
In the 35th minute, the national player almost scored a brace, but his cheeky effort behind the half-way line against Trapp failed to give Trapp the goal. On the Eintracht side, Hugo Ekitiké scored, but it wasn’t counted because provider Dina Ebimbe was offside. So it remained an even draw at half time.
Boniface still scores
The home team had the first big chance after the break. However, Boniface headed Brockaire’s cross unchallenged across goal from four meters (49′). However, the game remained even and Eintracht held up well. In the 58th minute, Ekitiké shot just after the corner far from 18 meters. In this phase the game was not as fast as at the beginning, but both teams were always dangerous.

In the 63rd minute there was another accident: Boniface was out of line and Andrich hit the ball on the post. Trapp then thwarted Eintracht: the keeper tried a deflected cross with a leg save, which became the perfect template for Boniface – the striker had so far only needed to go in to make it 2-1 – and he did so also (72nd).
For a long time, Eintracht’s rebellion was not in danger. At the start of stoppage time there was still a great chance: Hradecky shot at Jonathan Tah, Ekitiké briefly had the empty goal in front of him. Under pressure from Tah, he couldn’t get the ball right (90+1). As Tah Ekitiké jumped in the goal, Frankfurt called for a penalty – but Brych’s whistle and the VAR remained silent.
Bayer surpasses Eintracht in the table
So it remained as 1:2 and continued the terrible series of Hessians at Bayer Leverkusen: no win since 2013, no point since 2014. And in the current Bundesliga table, Bayer is now ahead of Eintracht, who slipped to the fifth place.
