The influential band was founded in 1987 in California by singer and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist and vocalist Mike Derd. Drummer John Kiefmeyer was added to the group, replacing him in 1990 and before the band’s second album “Kerplunk”, with Tre Cool, was recorded.
Before getting the name Green Day, the three musicians were known as Blood Rage and then Sweet Children. They became widely known in the California punk scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The band’s first releases were on the independent label Lookout! Their big hit came in 1994 with the album ‘Dookie’, released on the Reprise label. ‘Dookie’ went ‘gold’ quickly, and ‘Basket Case’ is one of the most popular and still popular songs. Later, the albums ‘Insomniac’ (1995) and Nimrod (1997) went platinum.
The younger generation got to know Green Day through their seventh album, ‘American Idiot’ (2004), which sold six million copies in America. Some of the songs that rose high on the music charts were ‘American Idiot’, ‘Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams’ and ‘Wake me up when ends September’. The next album, titled “21st Century Breakdown”, came in 2009 and received positive reviews. Three albums followed, ‘Uno’, ‘Dos’ and ‘Tre’, which were released in September, November and December respectively. The trilogy was less successful commercially, mainly due to a lack of promotion and frontman Billie Joe Armstrong’s rehab break.
Their twelfth album, Revolution Radio, was released in October 2016 and was their third album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 Top Albums of that time period. 2020’s 13th studio album, Father of All M****rs, received mixed reviews from fans. Their latest album, ‘Saviors’, was released on 19 January 2024.
