Dice Rafael Alvarez, ‘The Witcher’what The gods and Goda work that he is presenting this Friday at the Rome Theater from Murcia, is an “unusual show” in which he addresses how the human being clings to mythology when he looks into the abyss of the unknown. He does it from Host, the classic of Plautus; You know, the text in which Jupiter, in love with Alcmene, taking advantage of the absence of her husband, Host, who is at the head of the Theban troops in their campaign against the Teleboas, takes his physical appearance to deceive his wife and make love to her.

But in reality, the Cordovan actor tells a story that is intermingled with the rest of the stories he has represented throughout his long career, and he jumps from one topic to another and talks about nature, writing, reading, the importance of the word, of Host, Mercury, Jupiter and Sosias and of Fernando Simón and the pandemic, of our politicians… The Witcher style. He is the minstrel of our times, the interpreter who knows that “the word is the great creative instrument, it is the vehicle that transports the intimate impulse that is born from the soul, that gives life”. The word, always above the noise: “There is a lot of noise, with aggressiveness, with tension, with too much information, which leads us to uncertainty.”

The gods and God You say that it is the story of the brotherhood of the Mediterranean.

Well, something like that. The work is based on a comedy by Plautus and his comedy, in turn, based on a Greek tragedy that seems to have been lost. Plautus did see it, it was known in classical antiquity, but only the title remains of it. The tragedy was called Heracles and dealt with the myth of the birth of Hercules. It is on this subject that Plautus, four centuries later, in the first century BC, makes the comedy that he titles Host.

What must a story have for you to choose it as your own, for you to decide to put it together?

I have done Santa Teresa, the Greeks, the Spanish classics… If you notice, all these themes that I choose revolve around the same idea: the transcendent meaning of existence. What I seek is to know the meaning of our presence in the world. For many people, life is working, having a few drinks on days off, having children, going to football, watching TV, voting, if you live in a democratic system, or screw yourself and not vote and put up with the dictator on duty, but, in In any case, in the end, after you retire, you die. What meaning does that have? What is the message of this movie?

Tell me.

Those are the great questions of the classics and they don’t have a dogmatic answer, like the Church gives you a dogma, politicians give you a slogan as something unquestionable and such. That question has to be answered by each human being. That is the great challenge and the great adventure of human beings and to help you decipher this enigma is the wisdom of the classics.

You take the classics and deliver them to the public. Does he come out knowing them?

The public does not know the classics because not all of them are philologists or university professors, but when they leave the performance they leave knowing what there is to know about the classics: their distillate, the essence of a certain work and its application to a different moment. and a different culture. You tell Donald Trump all this about culture and the classics and he will tell you that what he needs is to win an election and earn more money. I would say to him: “Why does he want more money at the age he is if he is always pissed off with life?”

At what point did you discover that the best way for you to work was alone?

I discovered it out of necessity. I wanted to do theater, but also have my days off and work with more people, in a company, you can’t rest the days you want: you have to harmonize with the rest of the cast. That was very complicated. So I decided to do a monologue, which was The Lazarilloand I did very well and, from there, I have developed this way of working.

By the way, your theater it rides on meditation, doesn’t it?

Almost all of my work revolves around, not exactly the specific meditation techniques, but the vision of the world, a vision of life that has a lot to do with the vision of the world and the vision of life in which meditation techniques are supported.
