Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada agreed to be transferred from El Paso, Texas to New York to face trial for alleged drug trafficking.
This happened the day after a federal judge in El Paso denied federal prosecutors’ request that the historic founder of the Sinaloa Cartel be in the dock in the Court she presides over. Brian Cogan.
This Thursday, the judge Kathleen Cardone The presiding judge of the Western District Court of Texas, who presides, said that “the defendant has notified the government that he does not wish to oppose his transfer to New York.”

Cardone requested yesterday -when he rejected the transfer request made by the Department of Justice– to the Eastern District Court of New York a warrant for the transfer of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán’s former partner; Zambada García refused the transfer in a letter dated August 23.
The request is based on the risk posed by moving “El Mayo” between New York and Texas so that he can appear before the trials he faces in each of them.
“As the alleged leader and founder of the Sinaloa Cartel, to which many cartel members remain loyal, and against whom many rivals are motivated to commit violent acts of revenge, the defendant’s movement and incarceration raises extraordinary security concerns,” said Prosecutor Jaime Esparza.
The indictment against Zambada in Brooklyn was updated in February. There are 17 counts of drug trafficking on a large scale, in addition to the fentanyl traffickingmethamphetamines, marijuana, heroin, conspiracy to commit homicides and direct a criminal organization, beginning in 1989 until the beginning of this year.

Yesterday Kathleen Cardone denied the request for transfer of the historic founder of the Sinaloa Cartel, -made by federal prosecutors- to a court in New York with the argument, among others, that the case against him opened in El Paso is older than the one in New York, the first was opened in 2012; the second was updated to include charges for fentanyl trafficking.
In addition, Cardone noted that prosecutors have the power to use any of the formal charges that Zambada García faces in 5 different districts of USAand they decided on the one from Texas when he was arrested, after his appearance in El Paso, on July 25, and the next day he was presented in the court of that locality.

The report of the suspension of his transfer was released by American journalist Keegan Hamilton through his X account (@Keegan_Hamilton) In addition to stating the above, the judge also indicated that the arrival of “El Mayo” was surprising for the US authorities, because otherwise there would be no conflict over where he would be tried.

The request for transfer to the New York Court was made known on August 6, when journalist Alan Feuer indicated on his X account (@alanfeuer) what:
“Drug lord ‘Mayo’ Zambada will soon be transferred from El Paso to face trial in Brooklyn, in the same court where his partner in crime was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison.”
Feuer based his report on “four people familiar with the matter.”
Thus, if the transfer of the historic founder of the Sinaloa Cartel is allowed, he would be in the dock of Judge Brian Cogan, one of the most implacable magistrates of the EU justice systemwho sentenced not only Zambada García’s former partner to life imprisonment, but also a member of Al Qaeda.
Cogan, originally from Texas, is also known for having led the process against the former Secretary of Security of Mexico, Genaro Garcia Lunawho is awaiting sentencing on drug-related charges.

According to Feuer’s sources, the case would be sent to Brooklyn because it is “stronger” in that court.
To date, Zambada García faces at least thirty charges related to drug trafficking, dating back at least two decades.
“El Mayo” appeared alongside Joaquín Guzmán López, one of “Los Chapitos” on July 25 from Culiacán, Sinaloa, and was arrested by elements of the US Department of Justice.
According to separate statements by the US governments, no elements of the armed forces participated in this operation. Mexican security forces nor agency staff.

After his arrest, “El Mayo” released a letter in which he accuses that he was kidnapped by the son of “El Chapo” Guzmán, after he was called to mediate in a meeting between the governor of Sinaloa; Ruben Rocha Moyaand the former rector of the local University, Hector Melesio Cuenwho was killed that day.
