The ELA and LAB unions criticized yesterday the ERTE proposed by Arcelor Mittal in Lesaka, Legasa and Etxebarri and other plants in northern Spain, without affecting the Gipuzkoan ones. For the former, “the exceptional has become normal” in the Anglo-Indian multinational.

«Employment regulation files are a temporary instrument that companies must use exceptionally and where administrations must guarantee that the use of public money is correct. Arcelor Mittal, however, since 2009 applies files practically without interruption », he explained.

ELA was thus referring to the fire that occurred on March 23 in a blast furnace in Gijón, the consequences of which the company relies on to justify the adjustment. “As usual, the file has had the signature of the CCOO, UGT and USO, always ready to support the management’s proposals,” he added.

LAB, for its part, accused the management of ArcelorMittal of making “interested use” of the ERTE figure “for their own benefit.” In a statement, the plant referred in these terms to the preliminary agreement reached for said ERTE, which would affect around 7,000 workers, also at the plants in Gijón and Avilés (Asturias) and Sagunto, in Valencia.
