VERONA. Five men, aged between 20 and 72, resident in Sicily and Brescia, were arrested by the Carabinieri as part of an investigation into the robbery, carried out on May 29, 2023 in Castelnuovo del Garda (Verona) against two elderly people who were attacked, immobilized and gagged by six bandits.
The arrests were made by the Carabinieri of Peschiera del Garda, Misilmeri (Palermo) and Brescia. The precautionary custody order in prison follows the one made by the Arma last April 8th to one of the criminals who was identified shortly after the robbery.
On May 29, 2023, two robbers, pretending to be financial police officers, wearing a vest with the words “Guardia di Finanza” written on it and a distinctive plaque around their neck, simulated a check at the villa of the two victims, who, deceived, let the fake investigators in.
At the same time, two other criminals joined in and attacked the elderly couple, immobilizing them on a sofa with cable ties and threatening them with a semi-automatic pistol and a taser. Then the bandits stole 500 euros in cash, a rifle and a gold necklace stolen from one of the spouses. Before fleeing, the suspects gagged the victims and locked them in the basement bathroom. However, the couple managed to free themselves and call 112.
The Carabinieri began their investigations using the images from cameras in the area and also carrying out fingerprint tests which led to the identification of one of the robbers and subsequently to the identification of the other five who had participated in the robbery.
During the search of one of the suspects, a 72-year-old resident of Brescia, several firearms (pistols and rifles), ammunition and homemade silencers were found and seized, the proceeds of as many thefts committed in the provinces of Verona, Brescia and Bolzano. Furthermore, two of the weapons had been modified into sawn-off shotguns.
