It was found that seniors receiving basic pensions need 1.32 million won per month for living expenses in retirement, or 2.14 million won for a couple.
According to the National Pension Research Institute’s ‘2023 Basic Pension Recipients Status Analysis’ report released on the 6th, elderly people receiving basic pensions needed an average of 1,322,000 won per month for individuals and 2,143,000 won for couples to maintain a normal life in old age.
This is the result of a survey conducted by the research team (Researchers Moon Hyeon-gyeong, Kim A-ram, and Hong Seong-un) on 2,000 basic pension recipients in 16 cities and provinces across the country for two months from the end of June to the end of August 2023.
Recipients believed that they needed a minimum monthly living expense of 888,000 won for an individual and 1,486,000 won for a couple to cover basic living expenses.
Regarding the appropriate basic pension amount, 40% of recipients answered 400,000 won per month, and 24.9% answered 500,000 won per month.
The response that it is the current level (KRW 323,000 per month in 2023) was 17.8%, and the response that it is KRW 450,000 per month was 17.2%.
64.0% of recipients answered that they had ‘not prepared for old age or were unable to do so’. 34.0% responded that they ‘prepared but not enough’.
The average satisfaction score (out of 5) of all survey respondents to the question asking whether the basic pension helps their lives was 4.03, indicating that they responded that it is helpful overall.
The basic pension is a retirement income security system that pays a certain amount to the elderly aged 65 or older in the bottom 70% of income brackets. As of this year, it is available to those whose monthly income is lower than 2.13 million won for single-person households and 3.408 million won for couples.
