Bella Montoya, an Ecuadorian woman who was declared dead and woke up in the middle of her own wake, died on Friday, the 16th, after a few days of hospitalization, according to health authorities. The 76-year-old woman was pronounced dead on June 9 in a public hospital from Babahoyo, not southwest of Ecuador. As her family mourned her during the funeral, she woke up and knocked on the coffin for help. A video of the episode that went viral on social media shows the elderly woman breathing hard after her relatives opened the coffin. Bella Montoya remained hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) until Friday, when she died after suffering a “stroke [AVC] ischemic,” the regional health authority said on Twitter. Cited by the newspaper El Universo, his son Gilber Barbera confirmed the death. “This time my mother did die […], my life will no longer be the same”, he declared. Ecuador’s Ministry of Health had announced an investigation to determine who was responsible for the false death certificate. According to the hospital, the elderly woman did not respond to resuscitation attempts on June 9. Local media outlets claim she suffered from catalepsy, a neurological condition in which the body is paralyzed.
