The Catholic Bishops’ Conference today urged all parliamentarians to put aside political differences and agendas and reach a consensus to appoint an interim president and prime minister who is honest and can command the trust of all.

Absence of such an interim President and Prime Minister will further worsen the situation in the country and cause the people to lose faith in all elected members of Parliament,” said the statement signed by the President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Sri Lanka, Rev. Harold Anthony Perera and Secretary General, Rev. Anthony Jayakodi.

The Synod of Bishops also asked that a deadline be set for general elections so that people can exercise their right to vote and elect their representatives.

The country is in a critical situation economically, socially and politically. It has completely crippled our motherland. What the country needs is an immediate solution and long term and short term solutions to bring it back on track. Because of political instability. An interim leadership should be established at the center. A crisis for political power has emerged. All the political parties are yet to come to a consensus and the need of the hour is for a new President and Prime Minister to form a consensus government. The Bishops’ Conference further said in the statement that the rejected leaders should not be handed over to the government.
