The Catalan brewery Cap d’Ona, based in Argelès-sur-Mer (Pyrénées-Orientales), has just won for the fourth consecutive year the prestigious title of best brewery in the world in the ranking of World Beer Challenge 2023.

One more consecration for this couple of entrepreneurs, Élodie Pujol-Engler and Gregor Engler, who started their adventure 25 years ago and who are preparing to change dimension. “We want to increase our production from 5,000 to 15,000 hl, while maintaining our know-how as a French beer brewer, explains Élodie Pujol-Engler. To do this, we must expand. »

8 to 9 million euros of investment

In 2024, the Cap d’Ona brewery will move to a new 5,000 m2 production site in Céret, about thirty kilometers west of Argelès-sur-Mer, in place of the former factory of the cigarette paper maker Job. “It was important for us not to artificialize agricultural land for this project and we have the support of the Community of Municipalities of Vallespir to rehabilitate this wasteland”.

For this project, the bosses of Cap d’Ona are preparing to invest 8 to 9 million euros, almost three times their annual turnover. “We will also eventually triple the teams, going from 15 to 45 people,” adds Élodie Pujol-Engler. “For the moment, most of our beers are marketed in the region and a little in Spain, at wine merchants, delicatessens and a few starred restaurants. We are forced to refuse many markets, particularly in Germany, Belgium and Switzerland, due to a lack of volume. »

By changing size, the leaders of Cap d’Ona wish above all to increase their production of exceptional beers, notably aged in barrels. Once the move is made, the current site of Argelès-sur-Mer will be retained. “It will serve as a deposit recovery site”, next to the shop and the tasting bar.
