Last year, the AIADMK General Assembly was held on July 11th, following which O Panneer Selvam filed a case against the general body resolutions in Madras High Court. In the meantime, the election for the General Secretary was announced, declared as an urgent case due to the ongoing court proceedings. The case was heard by Justice Kumaresh Babu, where arguments were presented for both O Panneer Selvam and Edappadi Palanichamy. O Panneer Selvam’s side argued that the General Assembly resolution of July 11, 2022, was invalid due to violation of rules. On the other hand, Edappadi Palaniswami’s side argued that the General Body had the highest authority and that the functions were in accordance with the rules. While the Madras High Court allowed the general secretary election to proceed, the results were not published, pending further orders. Edappadi Palaniswami was later announced as the AIADMK General Secretary, after the court rejected O Panneer Selvam’s appeal in support of his petition. In the meantime, documents were sent via email and post by the AIADMK to the Election Commission of India, confirming Edappadi Palaniswami as the party’s general secretary.

Subsequently, the case opposing the resolution of the General Assembly was urgently taken up for hearing in the Madras High Court on the 22nd. The General Secretary election was declared as an urgent case.
The case was heard by Justice Kumaresh Babu. Arguments were presented for O Panneer Selvam and Edappadi Palanichamy. At that time, O Panneer Selvam’s side violated the rules in the General Assembly and General Secretary election notification. Therefore, the General Assembly resolution of July 11, 2022 should not be accepted. The argument was made that the general secretary should not conduct the election. On the other hand, in Edappadi Palaniswami’s side, the general body in AIADMK has the highest authority. The function is according to the rules. Thus, the argument was presented that O Panneer Selvam’s plea should be dismissed.
After hearing these arguments, the Madras High Court can conduct the general secretary election. But the results were ordered not to be published. The AIADMK general secretary election was completed following this order. The official announcement was withheld as only Edappadi Palaniswami had filed the petition. In this case, the court gave its verdict last Tuesday. At that time, the court rejected the petitions filed by O Panneer Selvam and the Madras High Court said that the decision of the General Assembly will go on July 11 and the result of the general secretary election can be announced.
Accordingly, Edappadi Palaniswami was officially announced as AIADMK General Secretary. He also took charge as AIADMK General Secretary. Meanwhile, O Panneer Selvam’s side has filed an appeal in a two-judge bench against the petition dismissed by the single judge in the Madras High Court. An investigation is currently underway.
In this case, the information regarding the selection of Edappadi Palaniswami as AIADMK General Secretary has been sent to the Election Commission of India. Documents are sent by email and post. The AIADMK informed the Election Commission of India that Edappadi Palaniswami is the general secretary of the party. The Election Commission of India, the Chief Election Commissioner and the Chief Electoral Officer have been informed by the AIADMK through documents.
