The election by acclamation of the Kingdom, on behalf of Africa, within this important decision-making body of the IAEA, demonstrates the confidence of the international community in Morocco, as an actor of peace, dialogue and consensus in multilateral forums under the High Guidance of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

In his statement on this occasion, the Permanent Representative of Morocco to International Organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Azzeddine Farhane, underlined the constant commitment of the Kingdom which has made South-South cooperation, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty the King, a fundamental axis of its foreign policy and a priority in multilateral forums, particularly in the service of the African continent.

Morocco, which held the presidency of the 64th session of the IAEA General Conference in 2020, will continue, during its term on the Board of Governors, efforts to promote dialogue, negotiation and the search for consensus as fundamental parameters for strengthening multilateralism and promoting nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, he assured.

Through its mandate, Morocco aims to resolutely pursue its commitment to supporting the important role of the Agency in technical cooperation, particularly for strengthening the capacities of African countries in the use of nuclear applications for peaceful purposes, particularly in the areas of water, agriculture, health and the environment, added the diplomat.

Made up of 35 member countries, the Board of Governors is one of the two executive bodies of the IAEA, alongside the General Conference, and whose mandate is to adopt decisions relating to the operation and policy of the Agency.
