Colombo: A new President is to be elected in the Parliament of Sri Lanka tomorrow.

There is a severe economic crisis in Sri Lanka and people are suffering from the lack of access to essential commodities such as rice and petrol. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa successively resigned due to the people’s protest against the government.

Currently, Ranil Wickramasinghe is acting as the Interim Chancellor. A secret ballot will be held tomorrow in the Sri Lankan Parliament to elect the country’s new president. Interim President Ranil Wickramasinghe, United People’s Shakti President Sajith Premadasa, Marxist JVP Party President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, and SLPP defector Dalus Alagaperuma are vying for the post of President. There are a total of 225 seats in the Parliament. The candidate who gets more than 50 percent of the votes will be elected as the new president.

A liter of petrol in Sri Lanka was sold at Rs.450. Now the price has been reduced by Rs.20. Similarly, one liter of diesel was sold at Rs.440. Its price has also been reduced by Rs.20. The vehicles booked for petrol and diesel will be supplied with fuel from 21st.

There is a rivalry between India and China to keep Sri Lanka on their side. In this context, in the last 4 months, India has given a loan of Rs.3,000 crore to Sri Lanka. Only 543 crores of credit has been given to Sri Lanka by China.

Political observers have said that India has defeated China in the matter of taking control of Sri Lanka.
