USA announced this Monday that it will work closely with “any government” that is formed in Spain after the general elections, because he considers that country an “indispensable ally, partner and friend”.

The general elections on Sunday threw a possible political blockade in Spain, since the conservative Popular Party (PP) does not add enough support with the extreme right of Vox, while the acting president of the Government, the socialist Pedro Sánchez, depends on the Catalan independentists to revalidate the position.

Feijóo wins but falls short and Sánchez has the key to try to govern

“The United States stands ready and eager to continue working closely with any government that emerges from the electoral process, just as we have done with previous Spanish governmentsto advance our shared interests,” a US State Department spokesman told EFE.

The spokesman assured that the Government of Joe Biden considers Spain as “an indispensable ally, partner and friend”, and stressed that the elections were held “freely and fairly”, with respect for democratic norms.

He also assured that both countries share values such as support for democracy, respect for human rights, international security, support for Ukraine and inclusive economic growth.

Later, asked by EFE at a press conference, the White House spokeswoman, Karine Jean-Pierre, made similar statements and expressed Biden’s desire to work with any government that is formed in Spain.

“We congratulate the people of Spain on the elections held yesterday, the United States will continue to work closely with any government that emerges from the electoral process, as we have done with previous Spanish governments in the past to advance our shared interests and goals,” Jean-Pierre said.

The PP won the general elections in Spain by winning 136 seats, although without a sufficient majority to govern, located in the 176 deputies.

The Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) of Pedro Sánchez obtained the second position with 122 seatsan insufficient result to govern, so, in addition to the votes of the left-wing coalition Sumar and those of the Catalan independentists from ERC and the Basques (Bildu and PNV), his re-election would depend on the positioning of the seven seats of the Catalan secessionists from Junts.

This formation is led by the former president of the regional government of Catalonia Carles Puigdemontfugitive from Spanish Justice and resident in Brussels.
