Nabia Berry, chairman of the Amal Shiite party, was elected today (Tuesday) by a majority of seven votes as chairman of the Lebanese parliament.

Barry and his party are Hezbollah’s closest allies, and he was the only candidate for the post of spokesman – which, according to the Lebanese power-sharing agreement, belongs to the Shiites. 65 MPs voted in favor of his reappointment.

Parliament was elected on May 15, but due to the division in the people, there is no coalition holding most of the 128 seats. At the end of the vote count, it was determined that Hezbollah and its allies had lost the majority they had held since 2018, and the camp now has only 61 seats – four seats less than the required absolute majority.

As you may recall, the elections in Lebanon were held against the background of great public anger over the situation in the country. The country is in economic collapse when last month the government officially declared bankruptcy. Lebanon’s economy has been in collapse for many years, with the local currency losing its value and millions of Lebanese lacking a fixed salary. The state failed to import enough fuel, which led to many in the country not having electricity for long periods.
