Low inflation, growth and record employment: Spanish voters are still not interested in the good numbers.

Spain’s economy is doing well, better than Germany. But despite good numbers, Pedro Sánchez’s left-wing minority government is threatened with an election defeat on Sunday. In the local and regional elections at the end of May, the socialist head of government had hoped in vain that the encouraging data would ultimately convince voters. In Europe, Pedro Sánchez and his deputy Nadia Calviño have won recognition for their economic policies. In Spain, they can apparently not score points again in the parliamentary elections.

The head of government, who has been in office since 2018, praises the fact that the economy “runs like a motorcycle” despite the pandemic and the Ukraine war. His conservative challenger Alberto Núñez Feijóo (PP) speaks of stagnation. At their election rallies, the PP and the right-wing populist Vox party gave the impression that Spain’s economy was on the brink. Neither party has presented a detailed alternative program. They promise voters to “abolish sanchism”.
