A steep increase, more than twice the amount in 2022-2023
King of Replay: “We must take seriously the intellectual reality of the self-certification system”
This year, the number of voluntary corrective actions (recalls) for electric vehicles exceeded 400,000. The most recalled electric vehicle was Tesla. In line with the situation where large and small defects, such as battery fires, are occurring one after another, it is pointed out that manufacturers’ efforts to improve fundamental defects are more urgent.
According to data released by Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker on the 27th, electric vehicle recalls are rapidly increasing every year. The number of electric vehicle recalls increased from 80,000 units (8 cases) in 2020 to 99,000 units (43 cases) in 2021, 200,000 units (68 cases) in 2022, and 182,000 units (77 cases) in 2023.
This year, based on January to August alone, the number reached 429,000 units (81 cases). This figure is more than double the number of 200,000 units in 2022, when the largest number of electric vehicle recalls occurred. If this trend continues, more than 600,000 units are expected to be recalled by the end of the year.
Looking at this year’s recall status by manufacturer, Tesla had the most with 210,000 units (Model 3, S, X, Y). Next was Hyundai Motor Company with 112,000 units (Ioniq 5, IONIQ 6, ELECTRIFIED G80, GV60). This was followed by Kia with 55,000 units (EV6). This number includes overlap between defect cases.
During the same period, free repairs for electric vehicles also showed an increase until 2023, but then remained flat this year. There were 574,826 units (67 cases) in 2020, 614,225 units (67 cases) in 2021, 1,196,630 units (97 cases) in 2022, and 1,087,620 units (83 cases) in 2023. This year, as of August, there are 335,679 units (60 cases). Free repairs are only available for vehicles that have been purchased or have a low mileage.
Rep. Bok Ki-wang said, “Consumer concerns about electric vehicles are growing, and frequent manufacturing defects and recalls are encouraging this.” He added, “The industry needs to take seriously the reality of criticism that the automobile self-certification system, which grants high autonomy to manufacturers, needs to be modified. “There is,” he said.
