In response to recent string of electric vehicle battery fires, the government is pushing forward with a plan to convert and expand existing electric buses in urban areas to hydrogen buses.

Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Park Sang-woo said this at a plenary session of the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee held at the National Assembly on the 21st, saying, “We are strongly considering hydrogen buses as an alternative to electric buses.”

On this day, Rep. Eom Tae-young of the People Power Party said, “Electric buses are increasing in number while the technology verification of electric vehicle batteries has not been completed yet,” and “national measures are needed.”

Regarding this, Minister Park Sang-woo emphasized, “We have already begun discussions with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy,” and “We have reached an agreement with the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy (Ahn Deok-geun).”

Minister Park also explained, “We are currently fine-tuning whether the four parties, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Ministry of Environment, and the Seoul Metropolitan Government, will push forward by signing an MOU (business agreement) or include local governments that wish to participate.”

He added, “We plan to soon pursue a strategy to expand the supply of hydrogen buses with the participation of central government ministries and local governments.”

Minister Park also announced that he would come up with a comprehensive plan to prevent electric vehicle fires by early next month at the latest.

Minister Park said, “We are currently in the final stages of coordination among relevant ministries with the goal of not exceeding early September,” adding, “In addition to passenger cars, major accidents can also occur when electric buses or large trucks catch fire, so we will pay attention to those areas as well.”
