Electricity and gas bills, finally some good news for those who are no longer in the protected market: what to check on the bill

by time news

The end of the protected market had thrown consumers into confusion, who feared very high bills, but there is good news.

These have been difficult months for all users who had electricity and gas supplies on the so-called protected market. Rates and costs were slightly more convenient than those on the free market, but then the Government’s decision to end energy protection has left citizens, businesses and consumer associations stunned. Unfortunately, there have also been communication issues and confusion has reigned supreme for quite some time.

Now the situation seems to be settling down and above all the fears of consumers who have been forced to switch to the free market have turned out to be (almost always) unfounded. Some recent data show that Prices are finally coming down, especially for electricity. On the gas side, developments related to the war between Ukraine and Russia are awaited, but those who are no longer in the protected market can breathe a sigh of relief.

Have you switched to the free market? Check your bill now, you might find a nice surprise

Last June, the protected market ended and users (except the so-called vulnerable ones) had to face the transition to the free market. Despite the fears, however, the free market has proposed numerous offers and so those who activated new contracts were able to exploit them at the right time. Today the data are comforting, especially as regards electricity.

According to one of the regional reports that are gradually being drawn up, electricity bills will be lighter from now until the next few months. A consumer protection observatory has compared the various offers of the moment, highlighting that compared to 2023, families are saving an average of 160 euros per year, although it should be noted that there was a slight contraction in consumption of approximately 9%.

Savings are expected for the next few months of up to 21-23% on average, while for gas the reductions are a little lower; according to some estimates, the weight on the bill could drop by about 8-9%. To understand if the transition to the free market has actually led to a reduction in the bill, it is sufficient to check the cost per kW or per cubic meter.

Today Electricity prices should be around €0.111/kWh While those of gas at 0.386328 €/Smc. Comparing this data with that present in the bill can help to understand if the activated offer is really convenient and those who intend to change supplier will have a fundamental element to choose the one most suited to their needs.
