Electricity demand hits record high again amid prolonged heatwave

Government: “No supply and demand issues… Prepare for emergencies”

As heat waves and tropical nights continue, summer electricity demand has once again reached an all-time high. The government expects that there will be no problems with electricity supply and demand, but is making every effort to ensure stable facility operation in case of an emergency.

According to the Korea Power Exchange on the 13th, as of 6 PM that day, the maximum power demand was tallied at 94.6 GW (gigawatts). The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy previously announced that the maximum power demand of this summer is expected from the 5th to the 9th of this month, and the actual power demand on the 5th (93.8 GW) was the highest in history. However, as the heat wave continued, the highest power demand ever was set again on the 12th (94.5 GW) and on this day. The maximum power demand in summer has been continuously increasing for the past three years: 91.2 GW in 2021, 93 GW in 2022, and 93.6 GW in 2023.

Total electricity demand, which represents the maximum power usage (including solar power generation) at a specific time zone, also reached an all-time high of 102.327 GW between 2 and 3 p.m. the previous day.

The recent surge in electricity demand is due to the increased use of air conditioners and other cooling devices due to heat waves and tropical nights. Seoul has been under a heat wave warning for 14 days since the 31st of last month, and tropical nights have continued for 23 consecutive days until the night of the 12th.

Although power demand is hitting record highs every day, there is no major problem with power supply and demand. As of 6:00 PM on the 13th, the power supply capacity was 104.8 GW, with reserve power reaching 10.1 GW. The power authority issues a ‘preparation’ level out of concern for power supply and demand if the reserve power is less than 5.5 GW, and is divided into △ ‘concern’ for less than 4.5 GW, △ ‘caution’ for 3.5 GW, △ ‘warning’ for 2.5 GW, and △ ‘serious’ for 1.5 GW.

However, as the sweltering heat is expected to last longer than expected, the power authorities plan to do their utmost to maintain a stable power supply and demand. They have already designated the period from the 24th of last month to the 6th of next month as the ‘power supply and demand countermeasure period’ and secured a supply capacity of up to 104.2 GW. An official from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy explained, “If the reserve capacity is insufficient, we will activate the emergency reserve resources in stages,” and “If an unexpected crisis such as a typhoon or heavy rain occurs, we plan to activate a rapid recovery system to minimize damage.”
