Spurred on by the new heat wave this summer and the return to activity, the price of electricity will rise again tomorrow for the third consecutive day. Its price in the wholesale market, which serves as a reference to the regulated tariff or PVPC, will rise almost 4%, to 117.25 euros per megawatt hour (MWh), its highest value so far in August, according to the results of the auction held today Sunday and whose data has been offered by the Iberian Energy Market Operator (OMIE).

By time slots, electricity will reach its highest price between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., with 149.6 euros/MWh, and its lowest between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., with 97 euros /MWh.

Despite marking monthly maximums, so far in August, electricity has been paid on average at 91 euros/MWh, compared to 263 euros/MWh for the same period in August 2022, the most expensive month in history.

Since 2023 began, the average price has stood at 88.8 euros/MWh, less than half that of last year. In fact, and despite adding its third consecutive rise, electricity will be 58% cheaper today than a year ago and will be at values similar to those of the main neighboring countries. In the United Kingdom, the average daily price for Monday will be 91.7 pounds/MWh (about 107 euros/MWh at the current exchange rate); in France, of 114.5 euros/MWh; in Italy, of 119.4 euros/MWh; and in Germany, of 121 euros/MWh.

Tope al gas

As has been the case since the end of last February, the gas cap, which the Government established at the time to try to contain the price of electricity, will continue to not be applied due to the fact that the price of this fuel on the Iberian Gas Market (Mibgas) continues below the limit of 60.6 euros/MWh set by the Executive for this month.

The so-called “Iberian exception” will be in force until the end of the year after the agreement reached by Spain and Portugal with the European Commission, although it is not ruled out that it could be extended beyond next December 31.
