This winter, the French should no longer need to contain their electricity consumption. Invited on Radio Classique this Tuesday morning, Marianne Laigneau, president of the management board of Enedis, was reassuring. “This year, I believe that we can be very confident about the conditions for the passage of winter, that is to say the balance between what is produced and consumed by the French, because the production forecasts for electricity, both nuclear and hydraulic, are good, at a better level than the previous year. »

Last year, individuals, companies and municipalities were asked to reduce their electricity consumption in the face of a risk of supply shortages, and therefore cuts. Towns and villages, for example, had reduced their consumption for public lighting by 20%.

At the same time, the French seem to have kept the good reflexes of sobriety. “We measure this at Enedis, there is an average 9% drop in consumption compared to previous years”. “Efforts” continued in companies and individuals. “The changes in mentality are underway,” she rejoices.

Combined effects

Choice really wanted or suffered? Since August 1, electricity prices have risen by 10%, after having already jumped by 15% in February.

“In this sobriety, there is a change in behavior, the fight against climate change, the desire to do more and more without fossil fuels… And then there is a constrained effect, which it was difficult to measure from because of the rise in energy prices”, recognizes Marianne Laigneau.

However, the boss of Enedis defends a “very competitive” cost of electricity in France compared to its European neighbors, and even “affordable”, in particular thanks to “protection systems put in place”.
