Acting Energy Minister Roberto Luque warned that blackouts have not yet been completely overcome.

In an interview with a radio station, Luque noted that the country’s electricity situation is getting worse every day. “The energy sector is in a crisis that depends on many things. For example, when we get over the generation problems because the reservoir was already full, a failure occurs at the country level, where a transmission line that fails should not generate chaos at the national level,” he indicated.

His concern, he noted, also points to the future, taking into account that in a few months the new dry season will begin.

Gasoline price hike was necessary

In another area, he justified the increase in the prices of Extra and Eco gasoline, by 26 cents per gallon, as part of a policy of reducing subsidies.

According to the minister, this subsidy is the most inequitable of all, since 53% of the resources go to smugglers and people who earn more than a thousand dollars a month.

The compensation created by the government, on the other hand, prevents a blow to the lower social classes.

“With this measure – compensation – what we are doing is protecting the user of taxis, mixed vans, motorcycle taxis and tricycles,” explained the official.

He also confirmed that the compensation transfer process is proceeding normally.

“There have been around 24,000 registered and already paid. So far, 10,000 more have been added,” Luque added.

Regarding the controversial traffic radars, he ordered that the contracts signed between the Traffic Commission and private companies be reviewed, in view of the serious irregularities detected.
