Electricity Tariff Increase for Homes, Commercial Establishments, and Industries in Puducherry: Taking Effect This Month

In Puducherry, the electricity tariff for residential, commercial, and industrial establishments has been increased, with the new rates taking effect from this month. The power department had proposed an increase and submitted the accounts to the Electricity Co-Regulatory Commission, which took public opinion into account and ordered the increase. The tariff for households using electricity under the One Lamp scheme has been raised from Rs 1.25 to Rs 1.45 per unit.

For residential units, charges for electricity consumption have been raised to Rs 2.25 per 100 units from the previous rate of Rs 1.90. Charges for households that consume between 101 and 200 units have been increased to Rs 3.25 from Rs 2.90, while those that consume 201 to 300 units will now be charged Rs 5.40 instead of Rs 5. Charges for electricity consumption above 300 units have been raised from Rs 6.45 to Rs 6.80. Similar tariff hikes have been implemented for cottage industries, poultry farming, horticulture, and fish farms.

Commercial establishments using low voltage electricity connections in commercial applications will be charged Rs 6 instead of the current Rs 5.70 for up to 100 units and Rs 7.05 instead of Rs 6.75 for 101 to 250 units. For users consuming over 251 units, a charge of Rs 7.80 instead of Rs 7.50 has been proposed. The tariff for high voltage plants in commercial use has been increased to Rs 5.60 per unit from the current Rs 5.45 per unit.

Electricity charges for LT connected industries will be increased from Rs 6.05 to Rs 6.35, while for 11 KV, 22 KV, HD connected industries, it will reduce from Rs 5.30 to Rs 5.45. For factories with power connections of 110 KV, the tariff has been increased from Rs 5.15 to Rs 5.50.

According to government officials, the Joint Electricity Authority has ordered a reduction of only 5 paise per unit from the tariff increase requested by the Puducherry power department. However, the electricity tariff for commercial use has been increased by 20 paise per unit compared to the power department’s demand. The tariff hike will be effective from this month.
