A few days after its withdrawal from the market in France, Apple is backpedaling. The American giant will update the iPhone 12 to comply with European rules. Apple had indicated that the iPhone 12 has been certified as compliant by numerous international authorities, after the national frequency agency requested its withdrawal from the market on Tuesday. A decision “for non-compliance of these devices with European regulations” relating to electromagnetic waves.

“After discussions and as requested (Tuesday) by the ANFR (the frequency agency), the manufacturer Apple assured me that it would implement an update on the iPhone 12 in the coming days,” said said Jean-Noël Barrot, the minister responsible for digital technology, in a statement sent to AFP. “ANFR is preparing to quickly test this update which would ultimately make the model compliant,” Jean-Noël Barrot declared on Friday.

A few days ago, the minister threatened to go further and request the recall of all devices if the American manufacturer did not comply. “The rule is the same for everyone, including the digital giants,” he told Le Parisien.

What waves are these?

In the case of the iPhone12, the “limb” SAR (i.e. a phone held in the hand or in a pants pocket) was measured at 5.74 watts per kilogram, while the limit is of 4 W/kg. The phone therefore only very slightly exceeds the set values. The “trunk” SAR (a phone carried in a jacket pocket or in a bag) is compliant, at less than 2 W/kg.

Different from North American or Asian standards, this standard is set at the European level. It “is ten times lower than the level of emissions which, according to scientific studies, can have consequences for users,” explains Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister responsible for Digital and Telecommunications, in our columns.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “there is currently no evidence that exposure to low-intensity electromagnetic fields is dangerous to human health.”

Apple denies any security concerns

Speaking to Le Parisien, Apple assures that the DAS problem is linked to a specific test protocol used by French regulators and not to a security problem. “Since its launch in 2020, the iPhone 12 has been certified and recognized as complying with all SAR regulations and standards applicable worldwide,” underlines the Cupertino firm.

And the Californian giant confirmed the minister’s announcement: “We will publish a software update for French users in order to take into account the protocol used by the French regulatory authorities. »
