“The political position of the people can be understood through the local council elections. If they are not ready to contest the election, the United National Party and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna can freely withdraw from the election field.”
– This was said by Professor Saritha Herath, a Member of Parliament who is a member of the Free People’s Council.
He mentioned the above while speaking at a press conference held yesterday at the office of the Free People’s Council in Nawala area.
He further said:-
“As the National Elections Commission has decided to hold the local council elections on the 9th of March, the government is investigating whether there is any new mechanism to postpone the elections. The commission has paid special attention to the electoral process.
There is no democracy in a country without elections. The political position of the people of the country can be understood only through elections. President Ranil Wickremesinghe and his Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna government do not have a people’s mandate.
The international community will never cooperate with a government without a popular mandate. The international community will understand the political position of the people through the upcoming local council elections.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena are not ready for elections. If the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and the United National Party are not ready for the election, they can freely withdraw from the election field.
A president elected by 69 million people was deposed by the people. He who was rejected by the people was elected President through Parliament. There is a huge problem regarding the People’s Order” – he said.
