Narmadapuram: Elephants are being given special care in Hoshangabad’s Satpura Tiger Reserve. Actually, Elephant Festival is being celebrated here from 7th September to 14th September, in which elephants are being bathed and massaged daily. They are also decorated with turmeric and sandalwood. Elephants’ favourite food jaggery, sugarcane and banana are also fed to them. Mahouts gave special hospitality to the elephants.
The festival takes place in September
Let us tell you that every year a festival is celebrated for elephants in the forests of Satpura Tiger Reserve. All the officers of STR are also present in it. In the month of September, when the rains start decreasing, the mahouts are engaged in their care to give new youth to the elephants. The elephants are given dishes of their choice, in which tikkad, jaggery, banana, sugarcane etc. are served.
Tourists and people unaware of wildlife may be surprised but elephants of STR are bathed for a week and decorated with turmeric and sandalwood. They are given their favourite food. During this time, elephants are not made to do any work.
Officials arrived at the Elephant Festival
Field Director L Krishnamurthy, DD Pooja Nagle, STR’s ADO Ankit Jamod and District Collector Sonia Meena also reached to inaugurate the Elephant Festival celebrated every year. The purpose of this Elephant Festival which runs from 7th September to 14th September is to rejuvenate the elephants. Let us tell you that on Saturday, they reached the inauguration of the rejuvenation camp in STR’s Churna Park Range. Field Director L Krishnamurthy said that for the rejuvenation of elephants, elephants are taken care of by giving them rest every year in Satpura Tiger Reserve.
Let’s rest for 7 days
The elephants that roam the forest throughout the year rest in the forest for 7 days. They will not be made to do any kind of work. They will be bathed daily for 7 days and massaged with oil. The mahouts decorate their elephants with a paste of turmeric and rice. On the occasion of the inauguration of the Elephant Festival, the district collector Sonia Meena also fed sugarcane and bananas to the elephants.
Elephants help in tiger rescue
In STR, man-eaters or tigers that enter residential areas from the jungle are rescued with the help of elephants. Along with this, those who go on wildlife safari in Churna and Madhai parks are also taken on elephant rides.
