Eleven South Australian restaurants earn Michelin stars

Ten South Australian restaurants earned Michelin stars in the first-ever guide for the state, with Magill Estate Restaurant claiming two. The event, held at Adelaide’s Convention Centre on Wednesday evening, marked a milestone for Australian dining, with 77 venues recognized.

The Michelin Guide, originally launched in 1900 to promote tire sales, expanded to Australia for the first time, awarding 11 restaurants with stars. Magill Estate Restaurant, part of the historic Penfolds winery, became the country’s first two-star recipient, while 10 others received one star. The ceremony, attended by Premier Peter Malinauskas and Michelin’s International Director Gwendal Poullennec, celebrated South Australia’s culinary diversity.

Magill Estate Earns Double Star for Culinary Excellence

Magill Estate Restaurant, led by chef Scott Huggins, earned two stars for its excellent cooking that is worth a detour. Huggins called the recognition an extraordinary honour, citing the restaurant’s blend of Australian ingredients and precise technique. The 10-course tasting menu, priced at $375 per head, features dishes like sea urchin with snow peas and spring lamb Wellingtons. Huggins said the win fulfilled a lifelong dream.

The Michelin Guide’s criteria highlight cooking that is worth a stop for one star and excellent cooking that is worth a detour for two, while three stars are for restaurants with exceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey. South Australia’s 11 starred restaurants include 10 one-star recipients and Magill’s two, with 16 Bib Gourmands for affordable, high-quality dining. The guide’s selection includes 77 venues, from Adelaide’s Restaurant Botanic to regional spots like Skilogalee Barrel House in the Clare Valley.

Financial Support and Regional Growth

The South Australian government’s financial contribution to the Michelin Guide remains undisclosed, though New Zealand reportedly paid $6.3 million for its inclusion. Premier Malinauskas emphasized the economic potential, calling it an historic moment for tourism. Tourism Australia reportedly turned down a $40m, five-year deal with the French company for a national approach.

Regional restaurants like LVN at Bird in Hand and Maxwell Restaurant in McLaren Vale also earned stars. Maxime Martin of Hardy’s Verandah won the best sommelier award, while Tourism Minister Emily Bourke highlighted the potential for tourism growth, with international travelers likely to prioritize Michelin-listed venues.

Reactions and Uncertainties

Magill Estate’s Huggins said the stars reflect the team’s hard work and skill. The guide’s selection, revealed at the ceremony, also honored young chefs like Shakaan Abillion, who won the Michelin Guide Young Chef Award. The event highlighted South Australia’s growing reputation as a culinary destination, with chefs and diners alike eager to see the long-term impact, but the full effects remain unknown.
