Deputy Mayor Eli Nacht sent a letter calling on the Ashdod municipality to prepare for the construction of a compound for refugees from Ukraine.
In the near future, many Ukrainian citizens will come to Israel, and also to Ashdod, part of the challenge will be where to accommodate everyone, with an emphasis on families with children or adults.
Eli Nacht, the deputy mayor, calls on the municipality to build a special complex for them in Ashdod that can accommodate them.
In a letter sent by Nacht to Prime Minister Dr. Yechiel Lasri, he referred to the plight of war refugees and wrote that “many civilians and residents, including many Jews, found themselves homeless, without food, medical equipment, clothing and basic necessities.
Today already more than one and a half million citizens and residents of Ukraine have left the country, and now each of them is facing a new reality of great uncertainty and helplessness.
“Many European countries such as Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, France, Slovakia and others are creating a shell for those people who were left homeless, basic groceries, food and drink, and I suggest that Ashdod do the same.”
“The city of Ashdod is characterized by an extraordinary multiculturalism, which gives it its status as one of the most significant cities of the ‘Israeli mosaic’.
Moreover, in the city of Ashdod live hundreds of residents of Ukrainian descent, who have relatives, acquaintances and friends who found themselves under the war crisis or are currently on the run, with no hiding place, food and water, without clothing in difficult conditions.
We expect that following the sanctions and the economic situation, the residents of Russia will also join the massive wave of immigration to Israel. In addition, many citizens are eligible for immigration, and also found themselves homeless at the center of the largest humanitarian crisis in Europe since World War II.
Therefore, we in the city of Ashdod must extend a hand to those immigrants as well as to those who left their homes in Korek and came to Israel, and now their applications are being examined by the Ministry of the Interior. “
In his letter to the mayor, Nacht writes: “I urge you to seriously consider and approve my proposal to build portable structures in order to accommodate those entitled to aliyah as well as to assist those who are currently without shelter during such a challenging period.
“Here are some options for the plots where the buildings can be erected: a brown plot in Lachish Park, which is intended for a high school in the future, or a brown plot in the Weizmann complex, which is intended for an elementary school in the future.”
